THE BENEFITS OF READING POETRY

Someone said that “poetry is a weapon loaded with the future”. I would add that it also gives us identity. In some way, choosing a poem and making it a motto for our life identifies us, distinguishes us, unites us to this or that current of thought, shows us the world, and, why not, adorns us as the best accessory. And there is no doubt that a good stanza says as much about us as our favorite perfume, the cream we put on our bodies, the scarf we wear around our necks or the beautiful shoes we wear.

I know people very close to Gioconda Belli. Also very Alberti. Few of us Lorca or those who have chosen Neruda as their flag. Without forgetting Benedetti, of course. In recent years, the Uruguayan poet Mario Benedetti has won the admiration of a multitude of readers who have made some of his poems authentic mantras, to the point of turning poetry into something accessible and widely disseminated.

And you? Do you have a favorite poet? Have you chosen your poetry? Is there a verse that accompanies you wherever you go? Perhaps it is a little poetry that you have lived with since childhood or it may be from a poet that you have discovered lately. In either case, I'm sure it defines and completes you. And it is that, whether you choose verses by Álvaro Mutis, Jean Cocteau, Gabriela Mistral or Ida Vitale, by Alfonsina Storni or Machado, from those mentioned before or from any of as many pens as we can find, I am convinced that putting a poem in your life will never hurt. A poetry does not weigh, does not occupy, does not consume. Remember, it does not go out of style. Having a poetry as bedside poetry is a luxury for which you do not need a credit card. It does not expire or rot. Rather, it's lightweight, portable, and will always, always add up. It won't open doors for you, but it will make you feel good. It will not be publicly traded, but you will be fortunate enough to share a piece of creation. Poetry beautifies, exalts, and relaxes; entertain, cultivate, and transcend.

Put poetry in your life. Put poetry, of course; that is, put sensitivity, militancy, joy, commitment. Poetry, in generic terms, is an attitude over the years. But, as if that were not enough, put a specific poem, with title and author. Learn it, recite it, repeat it in front of the mirror and you will see how you smile, share it among your friends and you will see how many people there are who also have poetry in their life.

They say of me that, although a novelist, I am a poet. They say that I don't know how to live without poetry and that my prose is what it is because a poet writes it. What I have clear is that poetry in generic form always accompanies me, but also specific poetry, with title and author. Today I want to share it with you; It's the one that says “Let's make a deal” by Benedetti. Do you know her? I will be happy if you do. Meanwhile, think… have you chosen your poetry yet?
